The illiberal turn represents a serious threat to the future development of the European community. Although most recent research on illiberal politics has focused on Poland and Hungary, we have seen how illiberal tendencies have emerged in many other countries, including Slovenia, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Turkey.
The SOS4democracy project, funded by the EU programme ‘Horizon Europe’, brings together research institutes and universities, civil society associations and journalists for a joint exchange and training programme to improve research on the recent turn towards authoritarian systems in Europe and elsewhere.
Project Objectives
The project pursues three main objectives
- To develop a training and research programme to equip researchers, journalists and civil society activists with the conceptual and methodological tools needed to analyse illiberal regimes.
- Ensure the transfer of know-how between academic and non-academic organisations involved in pro-democracy struggles.
- Improve the overall research and innovation capacity of all participating organisations.
Proposed activities
Over the four-year project time, the partner organisations will host team members from other partners for several months to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and methodologies of research and activism. Each year, the project team will provide mutual internal training and organise academic conferences open to external participation, hosted at the partner universities.
