Civil society in the fight against global mafias since the Palermo Convention to today
Palermo, 28 and 29 October 2022
In 2020, the 20th anniversary of the Palermo Convention for the fight against transnational organised crime was celebrated. In the same year, Libera would have liked to celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Commitment in Memory of the Innocent Victims of Mafias, which was not held due to the global health emergency. Twenty years after the entry into force of this landmark Convention, and after more than two years of global pandemic, there is an even stronger need to analyse how social institutions and organisations – at local, national and international level – are performing, and what progress they have achieved during those two decades in the fight against Organised Crime and Corruption, rethinking common strategies, always keeping in mind the many challenges that still exist.
Therefore, we do not want to miss this occasion to engage in more commitment!
The “CROSS – Civil society in the fight against global mafias since the Palermo Convention to today” event will therefore take place in Palermo on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October 2022. Addressing citizens, schools and the many environments that revolve around social justice and rights, in Italy and abroad, the event will be held in Italian and English. The two days – with the participation of international guests – will provide spaces for listening and sharing with round tables and speakers’ corners aimed at disseminating information on international experiences and projects in the fight against organized crime.
Among other international activities, Libera collaborates with UNODC – United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime – as part of the Civil Society Unit and with consultative status at ECOSOC – the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations, in addition to being engaged in the coordination of three transnational networks: ALAS America Latina Alternativa Social, in Latin America, CHANCE Civil Hub AgaiNst Organised Crime in Europe, and PLACE – Peace and Liberation in Africa through Change and Engagement, in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The initiative will be part of a wider activity, within the framework of the EUROPE HUB European project, which aims to strengthen cooperation among the member associations of the CHANCE network in the 0youth field, and which will therefore involve the participation of a large international delegation.
